If you have school going kids or little ones in childcare then you will understand that mad scramble to find suitable outfits for them when a festival or special day is celebrated at school. I usually try my best to find something that they will be able to wear a couple of times before they outgrow it. So I was super excited when I found Little Nyonya Batik! Not only do they have Sarong Kebayas for adults, they also pre-sewn versions for little girls!!!!
Little Nyonya Batik is an online/ home-based store run by a lovely lady, Della! I needed an outfit for Bella and myself pretty urgently (it was already Thursday and our Hari Raya lunch at Uncle Khai’s, was on Saturday!). I sent Della a Whatsapp message (I love it when you can do that instead of waiting for an email reply) to enquire if it was possible to visit her ‘store’ to try out the outfits and she fixed up an ‘appointment time’ for me to go over.
I was spoilt for choice for both Bella and I. While the adult sizes range from S to XL, the measurements can vary for each size. For example, each S size piece may vary in shoulder length or bust measurement. How many times have you tried an S size dress and found that it was a tad too tight, only to find that the M size dress was perhaps a bit too long? The slight variation in measurement for each size meant that I could find the piece that was the closest fit to what I need. That being said, it also meant that I had to forgo some designs. However that didn’t bug me too much as all the designs were so pretty, it helped me to narrow down my choices. J Della was very helpful throughout the process – teaching how to wear and tie the Sarong Kebaya, giving me suggestions, allowing me to plow through the different sizes and making a complete mess of her room..oops!
The designs for the little girls were pre-matched and pre-sewn. This meant that you didn’t need a brooch or kerosang to secure the as it came with pre-fixed buttons and the ‘skirt’ came with a rubber waist band. Totally fuss free and easy to put on! I initially purchased a Size 1 for Bella as I had underestimated her :p Della was kind enough to rush home from church on Saturday morning so that Bella could try on a Size 2 and have her piece exchanged, just in time for our lunch.
Apart from Sarong Kebaya for the girls in the family, Little Nyona Batik also sells Batik Shirts for Men (I’m hoping they will have a Boys range soon J ), jewellery, scarf, shoes, bags and accessories. All their products are handmade because they support the traditional handmade community.
