Should I get a Digital Lock and what Functions do I need?

As we were making the many decisions for our new place, there was one feature which we couldn’t quite agree on. The need for a digital lock. Being the embracer of new technology and everything automated, I was all for a digital lock. Come on it’s fun :p I mean convenient :p Joel on the other hand, doesn’t really care much for new technology (yes my loving husband who offers to take my 6 month old handphone so that I can take over the latest model that came from his newly re-contracted line.) I digress.

But yes so we went back and forth on this decision until yours truly finally won the ‘argument’ and loving husband grudgingly went along with it. After all, Happy Wife = Happy Life right?

So here are some of the main considerations that helped us to decide that we wanted a digital lock and the type of digital lock we eventually settled for.

Why even change your lock?

Because our unit is a brand new one and we would have given our keys to several people (i.e defects team, painter, contractor etc) at some point, we were concerned that duplication was done. In all honesty, I wasn’t too concerned about this but if it gives Joel a peace of mind then yes we will change our lock. Since we’re were going to incur that cost any way, why not go one step further and make it digital.

What functions do you want?

Digital locks offer a few key functions – pin code, guest/ one time pin, fingerprint, access card, RFID tag, Bluetooth/ handphone access. Some locks offer all functions (cost more) whereas others have different combinations of the above functions (cost less). Because there are so many different models out there, we decided to shortlist by the type of function we needed.

Fingerprint

I immediately knew that fingerprint was the one function I had to have. I mean what’s the point of a digital lock if I can’t play with have the fingerprint function. Furthermore I figured that this is the most convenient function to have because there was no pin to remember or access card to lose, it was just me and my fingerprints. 🙂

FullSizeRender (3).jpg

Pin Code

Because Joel was concerned that a fingerprint system may have issues reading certain people’s fingerprints, we decided that we needed an old school back up like a pin code. This is a valid concern because I have seen people who have fingerprints that are harder to read or hands that are too dry or too moist for reading to be 100% and fast all the time. So we decided a pin code would be a simple enough back up.

FullSizeRender (4).jpg

Digital lock ‘awake’ for pin code entry

Guest pin code

The choice of this function helped to narrow our choices significantly because not many models offered this options especially when coupled with the above 2 functions which we needed. The guest pin code was perfect for us because we usually have our extended family coming over while we are napping with the kids or when we are on the way home from activities. The guest pin code allows us to give them access to the house without being physically present and without giving them permanent access without us knowing who came by and when.

Access card/ RFID tag

While most people would have this function as their first default function for a digital lock, we decided otherwise. I disliked the thought of an extra piece of access card which we would have to carry around, potentially lose and then have to worry about who now has access to our unit because of a lost access card.

Bluetooth/ handphone access

Let’s just say this function was too high tech for me to suggest to a non new technology embracer and yes again I didn’t want the heart attack and headache of worrying about foreign access to my house on top of everything else, should I lose my handphone.

So in the end, we decided on a model which has a fingerprint function, with pin code and guest pin access. The model we chose could also be overridden by a master key or jolted by a regular 9V battery in case the battery goes flat (which shouldn’t happen because you will be prompted 2 weeks in advance to replace the 4 AA size batteries).

I have to say that after using the lock for a few days, I am super happy with the choice to get a digital lock. In fact even Joel has had a change of heart. Just this week, he forgot his keys to our rental place and needed to get in urgently. He had to get my keys from me in order to get in and he confessed later that he realised a digital lock would have saved us both a lot of inconvenience that day. So yay for me, happy wife is always right! :p

Hopefully this post will help you decide if the digital lock is for you and what combination of functions would work best for your home. 🙂

Defects Inspection – Absolute Inspections [Media Review]

The new home which we have waited 3 years and 5 months for, is finally ready! Well ok sort of ready, which explains why we have been pretty quiet in recent times and will be for the next couple of weeks to come.

We have just received keys to our new home but yes with a brand new home comes all the hard work before we get to enjoy it. Taking over the unit from the developer, ensuring everything is satisfactory and that there are no major defects, commencing renovations, furniture deliveries, getting the power, water and internet up and then the big move (again!)…trust me the list is alot longer than this in reality and already I feel tired looking at this list. :p

Because we have decided not to hire an Interior Designer (ID), we had to research, buy, schedule and oversee everything on our own. But yes that’s another post for another day.

However the first order of business for us was really to decide if we wanted to hire a professional defects inspection company to inspect our new place.

For those who may not be familiar with the process, owners of new developments are given a certain window to submit a list of defects found in their unit to their developer, after receiving their keys. This defects list can either be completed by the owners or by a professional defects inspection company.

There are two school of thoughts when it comes to deciding whether or not to hire a defects inspection company. Because the defects inspection company will be very very thorough and detailed and will pick up defects down to the nitty gritty (stains, chips, scratches), some people argue that they don’t have time for the tiny comestic issues and therefore are satisfied with doing it themselves and just picking up the big glaring items.

Some others prefer a professional doing the job because they either don’t have time to pick out the defects themselves or they want to ensure that every single defect, big or small is rectified before moving in.

We, fall in the middle of that spectrum. We have a very tight timeline to meet (1 month to rectify defects, do renovations and move) and really just want to rectify the big issues. However we recognise that not all big issues are glaring and staring at you in your face (eg. hollow tiles and uneven flooring etc). With 2 kids in tow on weekends, we also don’t have the luxury of spending a whole Saturday doing detailed checks around the new unit (I suspect the kids might do more damage in that 1 afternoon then we can find :p). So we decided to hire a professional defects inspection company to conduct the checks for us.

We touched base with Absolute Inspection a few months before receiving our keys and moved our tentative date a few times when our keys were delayed. Wee Kwang from Absolute Inspection was very accommodating, helpful and always responsive. This gave us a lot of comfort because we were already very stressed out by the delay of keys and the last thing we wanted was to be further delayed by a late inspection date.

Because of our packed schedules, I passed my unit key to Wee Kwang a day before the inspection. This way they could enter the unit and proceed with the inspection without me having to be present the whole way. For those who prefer, you can open the unit for them that very morning or even stay throughout the inspection. We chose to come back once the inspection was done for them to run throught the defects found. Wee Kwang and his team took about 6 hours to finish our job.

I had communicated to Wee Kwang earlier that we would only pursue the ‘big issues’ so you would think that they would have just gone for the obvious stuff and done a simplified check. But no, they did a thorough check as they would have done for all customers and I got a defect list with 90 odd number. That being said, they only went through the major issues with us which I was grateful for. 🙂 You will notice little blue post sticks indicating cosmetic defects, all over my walls, all through the unit.

IMG_8070

Can you spot all the small post sticks on the wall?

We submitted our defects list to the developer immediately after the inspection and waited for the developer to inform us of our Joint Inspection Date.

The Joint Inspection involves the owner and the developer meeting to run through the defects list submitted and for the developer to acknowledge which ‘defects’ they will be rectifying. Because we hired Absolute Inspection, Wee Kwang was also present for the Joint Inspection. In fact, Joel and I just stood by while Wee Kwang did all the talking.

The wonderful part about hiring a professional to do this, was the fact that I didn’t have the stress of haggling with the developer and their contractor on what was a defect and what was not. Wee Kwang helped to talk them through the defects and at times even offered solutions on how it can be rectified so that the contractor would not try to push it off as difficult or impossible or not a defect. In fact the entire process, was very cordial and stress-free because both parties knew each other from previous project inspections. I had expected the process to be a lot of finger pointing and pushing the blame but it was a far cry from that!

Joint inspection

After the joint inspection, we handed our keys over to the defects team to start their rectification. Because we didn’t have many major defects, our entire rectification process took about 2 weeks.

We met up with the defects team after 2 weeks to check that all the rectifications had been made to satisfaction and Wee Kwang was again onsite to conduct the checks.

While most items were rectified, there were still some that were either not done to satisfaction or they might have missed out on. We were blessed with a very hands on defect team/ developer’s rep who immediately called workers onsite to do the touch ups and Wee Kwang was on hand to give specific advice on what needed to be rectified. Some items which were missed out were a slanted switch, kitchen cupboards with hinge issues, touching up of sealant and visible scratches on our balcony door. All of which were rectified on the spot!

We have finally completed the defects process which was one of the major concerns we had, going into this. I have to say the entire process was smooth and stress-free because we chose to engage a professional defects team to see to the job.

Now onto the next stage….renovations and furnitures! More on that in a couple of weeks! 🙂

Shrek the Musical – Our Favourite Parts!

Jah and I recently went on a mother-son date to catch Shrek the Musical at the Marina Bay Sands. It was the first time that we/ Jah was catching a full-on musical (2 hours and 25 mins long!) together and at a time slot that would take him way past his bedtime of 9pm. But oh we had so much fun! At the risk of revealing too much about the show, I will attempt to share our 5 favourite things about our time at Shrek the Musical (not in order of preference).

IMG_7872.JPG

IMG_7889

Please excuse our grainy selfie 🙂

  1. The orchestra…

We were seated in the second row of the theatre and I couldn’t resist pointing out to Jah that there was an orchestra ‘beneath the stage’. He took a peek into the ‘big hole’ in front of the stage and was excited to find that there were many ‘uncles’ playing different instruments. I think that is when it hit him that every note and tune played during the musical, was played by a live orchestra…nice..:)

2. We love love love the Donkey

If we had to choose our favourite character, it would be the Donkey. Ironically the donkey was one of my least favourite characters in the movie..but his antics, humour and voice really brought the show to a whole different level…we were really tickled by his banter with Shrek!

3. The Gingerbread Man…the real one…

What real one you say? The actual gingerbread cookie which they were selling at the concession stand. Jah had 1 before the show started and another 2 at the interval…yes thats how much he liked it so I say kudos for having theme related snacks which apparently tasted yummy and was priced really reasonably. Big win for Jah and Mummy!.

IMG_7886.JPG

4. The Villian…

Jah had asked me before the show if Lord Farquaad was played by a ‘toy’. He remembered watching the commercial for the musical and said that it was impossible for Lord Farquaad to be an adult person because he was really small….he went to the musical wanting to ‘solve this mystery’

He finally understood how the effect was achieved after watching the show and was very impressed by it. Even I was impressed by it and all I can say is that it certainly took alot talent and dedication to do it!

Christian_Marriner_as_Lord_Farquaad_in_Shrek_The_Musical_L_vR.jpg

5. Effects and Music

Lastly we were super impressed by the effects – the combination of  traditional props and technology. The music was also really catchy! Jah was more than happy to groove to the finale song that he didn’t ask to leave even after the curtains came down. (He is usually quite the impatient to leave once he senses that a show has ended).

So yes I have to declare our first proper musical a success! And Jah is already setting his next milestone challenge…a musical 3 hours long..:p

Shrek The Musical comes to Singapore

I remember it was a long long time ago when the first Shrek movie hit the big screens..2001 to be exact. It was definitely pre-kids for me, in fact I wasn’t even an adult yet! But Shrek was truly a fairy tale of a different kind, one with an unlikely hero and a sense of humour. I also remembered my sister in law using one of the songs from the Shrek soundtrack for her wedding march-in, some years later. After all, Shrek the movie did have a pretty awesome soundtrack too.

Fast forward 15 years later to post kids me and its not hard to believe that my kids love Shrek too. We even went on a cruise in pursuit of them. :p

Shrek The Musical based on the Oscar winning DreamWorks Animation film is coming to Singapore for the first time as part of its first ever international tour. It’s no surprise that the kids have requested to watch Shrek the Musical, the moment they saw its posters hanging from the beams at the Marina Bay Sands. To be honest, I have been bombarded with these ‘demands’ every single time, we pass a poster, spot a brochure at Sistic or see a commercial on TV.

And can you blame them? After watching the animation version of Shrek and his friends on the big and small screen countless times, imagine the appeal of watching ‘real life’ Shrek, Princess Fiona and everyone from Far Far Away!!
Freak_Flag_with_Tony_Johnson_as_Pinocchio_L_vR.jpg
This live adaptation of the popular animation Shrek brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre on stage. For those of you who may not be as familiar with the story, in a far away kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey that does not keep quiet, a villain with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand and his name is Shrek.
